French-speaking Vaud lies on the border of Switzerland and encompasses the cities of Lausanne and Montreux. This culturally rich region of the country is perhaps best known for its access to Lake Geneva. Lausanne is a sizeable city on the banks of the lake that boasts a history dating back to the stone ages. For a quick shot of culture, visit the Palais de Rumine. Built in the style of the Italian Renaissance, the palace is home to 5 different museums focusing on the arts and natural history. As home of the International Olympic Committee, Lausanne also has an interesting Olympic Museum.

The beautiful city of Montreux is an easy train ride from Lausanne and also sits along the edge of Lake Geneva. Known around the world for its annual jazz and Golden Rose entertainment festivals, it’s also a favourite among luxury travellers due to its numerous spas and award-winning restaurants. For example, restaurant Le Pont de Brent boasts 3 Michelin stars and is located on the outskirts of the city. Montreux also contains a casino called the Casino Barrier Montreux. The casino is quite large and has nearly 400 electronic gaming machines in addition to a good number of gaming tables with poker, blackjack, and English and French roulette. In order to visit the casino, visitors must be at least 18 years of age with a valid ID and casual dress is allowed.
