Rhineland Palatinate (Rheinland Pfalz)
A large state in western Germany, Rhineland Palatinate borders Belgium, Luxembourg and France, and is a very scenic region of the country. Consisting of thriving agricultural communities, it is the wine growing capital of Germany and is known for its sweet Riesling wines. The many wineries in the region are also open to tourists for wine tasting and tours. The mighty Rhine River flows along the state’s border and is a popular spot for hiking, mountain biking and sightseeing. The state’s capital is Mainz, which is famous for its Gutenberg Museum, market square, and 1000 year old cathedral. The market square, or Marktplatz, is the hub of the city, and is home to period architecture and excellent German restaurants.

The city is also home to a casino located just outside its old town.
