Situated in the western-most part of Germany, North Rhine Westphalia (Nordrhein Westfalen) borders Belgium and the Netherlands, and is Germany’s most populated federated state (Bundesland). In fact, four of the ten largest cities in Germany are located in this region, including Cologne, Dusseldorf and Dortmund.
The region is known for the Ruhr Valley, Germany’s largest urban area with a population of over 7.3 million and one of the largest industrial areas in Europe that developed around the coal mining and steel making industries.
However, this regions in not all work and no fun and is equally known for its numerous museums and diversified cultural scene, ranging from the cathedrals of Aachen and Cologne, both World Heritage sites and definitely worth visiting, to GamesCom, the world’s largest video game convention taking place annually in Cologne.
