Picardy (Picardie)
Picardy (Picardie) in northern France lies at the center of the triangle created by Paris, Amsterdam and London and has plenty historical attractions to interest tourists as a result. Amiens, Beauvais and Compiegne are all popular stops for visitors and combine to create a collection of France’s best preserved examples of Gothic architecture. The mighty Amiens Cathedral, first built in the 13th century, is a popular sight along with the unfinished Beauvais Cathedral. Considered by many as the most ambitious construction of its time, the Beauvais Cathedral was perhaps too daring and was marred by accidents and collapses.
In addition to its historic interior towns, Picardy features a small slice of Atlantic coastline. Cayeux sur mer is a popular beach town with locals, but is also adored by foreign tourists. The town is adjacent to a charming beachfront area that includes rows of beach huts and a casino. The Casino de Cayeux sur mer is a relatively small establishment that offers slot machines and a few live tables where visitors can play Boule, a local favorite. Casino patrons must be at least 18 to enter and show proof of a valid ID. Casual dress is permitted.
