Upper Austria boasts as much beauty as the rest of the country. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic. Linz is the state capital lying just 30km south of the Czech border and is a gorgeous city-break destination. The third-largest city of Austria, a historic settlement standing on both sides of the Danube River, Linz boasts many fine old buildings, churches and religious monuments. Linz was the European Capital of Culture in 2009 and is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities network, seeing itself as a City of Media Arts. However, the city is most famous for its culinary achievements, with the Linzer Torte reputedly being the oldest known cake in the world. The first time Linzer Torte featured in recipe books was in 1653.
Located in central Europe, Linz benefits greatly from Danube tourism, offering educational and fun-packed river tours to tourists. Linz’s erstwhile resident, Anton Bruckner, the composer, and the Bruckner Haus, are two more popular attractions.
